Mrs. Maud Maude's February 1892 article displayed here is the second in a series of three she did for the Delineator magazine. It offers instruction and a nice selection of conventional patterns, especially borders, for the student to use in learning how to use the Vulcan pyrography tool and its platinum points. Although the instructions address beginners in many cases, they are quite in depth for the uninitiated. It seems likely that most students would have read them with the intent of afterwards seeking a classroom situation where a teacher could provide the step-by-step guidance required. William Freeman, the illustrator for Maud Maude's book and presumably for these articles, had his own studio and gave pyrography classes there and in his students' homes, if they wished. Maud Maude's article series gives a general idea of what would be entailed in undertaking pyrography and thus offers encouragement for the prospective students to purchase the pyrography tool, the Maud Maude book, and seek out a teacher.
