American artist William Fuller Curtis (1873–1938), like J. William Fosdick before him, studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris. Unlike his predecessor, however, he resided in Washington, D.C.
The owner of this large panel is the mother of Alicia Santy Watson, who has been researching it on her behalf and says it has been in their family for many years. William Fuller Curtis was famous for his striking integration of low relief carving and pyrography with small touches of gold. The relief carving in this unusually large pyrographic panel is particularly deep, even for Curtis.
Although nothing further is known of its provenance, it is signed and dated by the artist, and the title is displayed on an engraved, gold-plated plaque on the frame. We also know that the artist exhibited it in 1904 at the prestigious Architectural League of New York.
If you have either any questions to ask or any information to offer regarding this pyrography panel by William Fuller Curtis, please e-mail the owner Alicia Santy Watson and the E-Museum Curator.
