American pyrographic artist Tom Schulz has made Alaska his home since 1985. His love for Alaska is reflected in his art work. The pieces shown here done on moosehide are in celebration of Alaska's centennial and a salute to the artists whose moosehide pieces of 100 years ago are on exhibit from 2 February to 24 March 2002 in the University of Alaska Museum in Fairbanks. Thanks to Tom Schulz, some images from this exhibit, entitled: Burned Into Memory: Images of Alaska Through Historic Pyrography, are in the Alaska Salon here in the E-Museum.

The second moosehide work was inspired by the first but done to portray specifically Felix Pedro, the prospector who discovered gold in Alaska in 1902. There is an actual gold nugget in the hand of Felix Pedro.

The Felix Pedro portrait in wood set in the prospector's goldpan is a limited edition of 100. Both the second moosehide and the number one portrait in wood of the 100 were gifts to the Italian contingent that came for the centennial celebration. Read more details in Pyrograffiti 19 in the September–October 2002 issue of the Woodcarvers Online Magazine.

Here is the letter Tom Schulz received from the Mayor of Fairbanks Letter from the Mayor of Fairbanks. And a resolution signed by the Mayor of Fairbanks Mayor's Resolution

Both the Alaska exhibit and Tom Schulz himself were featured in Pyrograffiti 16 in the March–April 2002 issue of the Woodcarvers Online Magazine. More of Tom's work can also be seen in his photo album.
