Alan Pechner from Silver Spring, Maryland, U.S.A., combined pyrography and bas-relief carvings on his wood panels.

This exhibit is for a dear friend, Alan Pechner, whom I met back in the 80's at a meeting of the Northern Virginia Carvers. He was an avid woodcarver at the time, and we began talking at my table where I was demonstrating woodburning techniques after giving a talk about the process that evening.

He was intrigued and incredibly enthusiastic about incorporating the technique into his carvings. In fact, he developed a new term for the electric woodburning tool: The Pyrocarver! He not only incorporated the technique into his own work, but began promoting and selling the Pyrocarver along with the other carving tools he sold.

The work shown above is a selection of his pieces that reflect his wide range of interests, from Japanese woodblock prints to stories from the Hebrew Bible to pastoral scenes of cottages in the countryside.

His intricate technique combines carving with woodburning to create a bas-relief effect enhanced by a range of textures. He exhibited at shows along the East Coast and continued developing his technique throughout his life. He died in July of 2019.on, is also here in the Decorative Arts Hall of the E-Museum (and cross-referenced in the Traditional and Folk Art Hall).
