Turkish artist Muammer Kirmizigul resides in the city of Istanbul and has been doing pyrographic art only since 2019. The 60-year-old artist has made it his personal challenge to interpret his Surrealist art works in the technique of pyrography. In addition to working every day dedicated to this effort, Muammer has just made a new decision, and that is to write the first book in Turkish on pyrography!
Muammer was never formally trained in art; however, from the time he was a small child, he was drawing in pencil, then charcoal, and during his teen years, he was doing oil painting. He credits his family genes for his talent, and notes that art has always been a big part of his family life. Particularly his uncle, a professional artist, Halil Gelgeç, gave Muammer guidance and encouragement. With his uncle, he learned the art of signage, and had the opportunity of working in the industry for a couple of years in the 1980’s.
It wasn’t until his retirement in 2019 that he discovered pyrography. In the short time since then, he has made many efforts to develop his technique. He watched videos from artists abroad and started doing three-dimensional studies on his own. He then had the good fortune of finding artists in Turkey, like Selahattin Olceroglu, who had been perfecting the art of wood burning for 40-50 years. He learned a lot from these mentors, and their encouragement and praise inspired him to make pyrography his passion.
Now, his Surrealist Pyrographic work is being exhibited around Turkey and he has found a sizable following on social media, too. You can follow him on Instagram and youtube @yakmaresimsanati
He writes: “I continue my struggle for the art of wood burning to be recognized as ART in our country and for an ART that is on the verge of extinction to be passed on to future generations.” And I, of course, admire his effort and hope this beautiful art form continues to find its home in Turkey.
Muammer Kirmizigul has his own website with a gallery of his works at www.yakmaresimanati.com
