Pyrogeometric
by Michael Janson

Pyrography on paper, 40*40 cm

"This work consists of 49 different quadratic patterns,
each of which forms a square 7*7. I want to explore the
brownscale possibilities of pyrography. It's impossible (I think)
to qualify this pattern as one belonging to a concrete national culture."

"But this pattern looks like a motif of North American Indians.
As you can see, this one is only a slight computer transformation
of the original pattern."

Russian abstract artist Michael Janson works and resides in St. Petersburg.

Michael Janson has been featured in the Woodcarvers Online Magazine.(WOM) on a few occasions. His story and more of his art works were introduced in an article in Pyrograffiti 12 in the July–August 2001 issue of WOM. He later contributed a didactic article in Pyrograffiti 21 in the March–April 2003 issue of WOM; he wrote that article himself (in English) on using computer graphics to create variations on pyrographic works. And he is also featured in an article segment in Pyrograffiti 29 in the May–June 2004 issue of WOM, on the inspiration for the works shown here in his E-Museum salon no. 2.

Published in St. Petersburg, the second annual catalogue of Russian artists, ArtIndex 2004, featured Michael Janson again this year—with his work Universum, displayed in his Michael Janson salon no. 1 here in the E-Museum. That update was also highlighted in an article segment in Pyrograffiti 31 in the November–December 2004 issue of WOM.
