Cynthia McKinley holds in her gallery at Wigs on the Green Fine Art this beautiful "rare pair of George III pyrography portraits of classical figures, one a dancing muse playing the triangle, the other a Grecian lady leaning on a ledge by columns. Both inscribed on the reverse by Joseph Smith of Skipton Castle and dated 1808."

This pair of panels in their original gilt frames are rare indeed; the panels with their beautifully rendered graceful subjects are in excellent condition for their age, a decade earlier than the next earliest work, and the only known pair. (The two Smith works at Harewood House are not described as a pair.)

An article entitled The Pinto Collection: Important 19th C. Pyrographic Artists highlights research and notes by conservator Susan Millis on that collection, which has at least one other work by Joseph Smith and is located at the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in England.

If you have either any questions or any information regarding this Joseph Smith work or others by this artist, please e-mail Cynthia McKinley of Wigs on the Green Fine Art and the E-Museum Curator.
