Douglas Schneible in Vermont, U.S.A., acquired at auction the above beautiful pyrograph (also called pokerwork) signed Smith Pyrographist and dated 1824 on the verso by English, early-19th-Century artist Joseph Smith of Skipton Castle in England. The work is mounted in a carved and possibly the original gilt frame with clam-shell cornices.
This is the second panel by this artist done after this particular painting by John Singleton Copley. An earlier panel, dated 1818, is likewise displayed here in the E-Museum.
An article entitled The Pinto Collection: Important 19th C. Pyrographic Artists highlights research and notes by conservator Susan Millis on that collection, which has at least one other work by Joseph Smith and is located at the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in England.
If you have either any questions or any information to offer regarding this Joseph Smith work or others by this artist, please e-mail Douglas Schneible and the E-Museum Curator.
