Jane Raven recently acquired this 1816 panel by English artist Joseph Smith, which is currently in London. It is done after a painting by Rembrandt entitled "Man in Oriental Costume." The panel here is signed with Smith's usual signature, which was only his surname. This artist worked out of his studio over the entrance of the Castle at Skipton shown in John Hague's research travelogue at the link to the castle here.

In the Pinto Collection at the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in England, there is another 1823 work by Smith with this same theme of a Man Wearing a Turban, as well as an 1810 full-length portrait by Joseph Smith of the Earl of Camden (after a painting by Hoppner), a pyrograph of Two Tigers, another of a Man Reading, and a fifth of a Physician at a table with a skull. An article entitled The Pinto Collection: Important 19th C. Pyrographic Artists highlights research and notes by conservator Susan Millis on that collection.

The owner of this Smith "Man Wearing a Turban" is offering it for sale for £475. If you would like to purchase this work, please contact Jane Raven the owner.

If you have either any questions to ask or any information to offer regarding the Joseph Smith work displayed here or any of this artist's works, please e-mail the E-Museum Curator.
