Lynn Derrick in England, acquired this beautifully rendered pyrograph, which is believed to be entitled "Kneeling" because of another similar composition with that title dating back to 1610 by an unknown Hungarian artist. The panel exhibited here, signed Smith Pyrographist and dated 1823 on the verso, is by English, 19th-Century artist Joseph Smith of Skipton Castle in North Yorkshire, who was a well recognized artist in his own lifetime. The panel, which is unframed and slightly bowed, is believed to be after a yet-to-be-determined 16th–17th Century painting. Note that this exquisite panel is for sale. If you are interested in acquiring it, please contact the owner Lynn Derrick at the link to her name at the beginning of this paragraph.

An article entitled The Pinto Collection: Important 19th C. Pyrographic Artists highlights research and notes by English conservator Susan Millis on that collection, which has at least one other work by Joseph Smith and is located in the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in England.

If you have either any questions to ask or any information to offer regarding this Joseph Smith work or others by this artist, please e-mail Lynn Derrick and the E-Museum Curator.
