Ethnographic art dealer and antique pyrography collector Douglas Schneible in Shelburne, Vermont, acquired the beautiful panel above in 1996.
The artist Clyde Marshall Stewart (1887–1921) was from Augusta, Maine, U.S.A. He must have rendered the moving portrait The Guide at about twenty years of age. His placement of his signature is most unusual—on the left hand side of the middle section of the panel. His application of the printed label on the back of his wood panel suggests that he was already establishing his artistic career at that young age.
By about 1915, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the U.S. Government at the Department of Agriculture. Sadly, only about six years later, after several months of illness, he succumbed to tuberculosis—back in the family home in Augusta, Maine—at the age of only 34.
His obituary in the Kennebec Journal of November 30, 1921 in Augusta, Maine, which said he was survived by his wife, a son, a brother, and his parents, described him as "...an artist of ability, his work having received much favorable notice." His "Record of Death," which listed his occupation as "artist" suggests the likelihood that his work for the Government was in his capacity as an artist.
Douglas Schneible has an extensive website The Arts & Crafts Gallery featuring his fine collection of antique pyrographic works and history along with his ethnographic art and artifacts.
