Carlos Borbón of Costa Rica, who signs his work in his pseudonym "carbón," has been producing what he terms his Pyro Sculptures on Leather since 1981. Until the fall of 1999 when for the first time he added acrylic paint and a patina finish to his handsome pieces, he was creating all of his tonalities by means of pyrography with a standard wire-tipped tool plus burning by friction produced by a tool of his own invention. He likewise designed tools to create a series of textures on the leather, and others to aid him in producing the relief work he also incorporates in his distinctive technique.

"carbón" was featured in a Pyrograffiti article entitled Special Techniques: Sculpted Leather Pyroengravings by Carlos Borbón, in the September 2000 issue of the Woodcarver On-Line Magazine linked here.

In November–December of 2004, the subject of a new article was "carbon's" New Website of PyroSculpture on Leather.

On January 30, 2009, "carbón" was featured on Channel 15 in Costa Rica on a program called: Analisis: Carlos Borbón "carbón" Pirograbado en cuero (Analysis: Carlos Borbón "carbón" Pyroengraving on leather).
