A Practical Lesson on the Dignified Art of Burning Wood
by C. Frank Ingerson
Studio: 933 Marshall Field Building, Chicago

Adapted from the Pyrography Catalogue, 1901

Published by Erker Bros. Optical Co., 608 Olive Street
St. Louis, MO., U.S.A.

Exhibited here is a single-page illustrated article introducing the Pyrography catalogue published by Erker Bros. Optical Co. of St. Louis, Missouri. The contents of the catalogue, however, appear to be similar to items offered by Thayer & Chandler of Chicago, who also claimed exclusive rights to the use of Charles Dana Gibson drawings and designs for pyrography. The author of the article, artist C. Frank Ingerson also had his studio in Chicago.

The Erker Bros. Pyrography catalogue is very well prepared, very carefully laid out, and quite extensive. The copyright indicates that it was published by the Life Publishing Co. Charles Dana Gibson was the superstar illustrator of his time. He got his start with Life Magazine, and eventually became its editor. Research is underway to discover what connection Erker Bros. had with Life Magazine and Charles Dana Gibson. From their blurb on the inside of the catalogue cover, Erker Bros. Optical Co. was not only a distributor but a manufacturer—of both optical goods and pyrography supplies.
