This small panel by Ball Hughes entitled The Monk is the third work done with this title after the award winning photograph by William Lake Price. It is owned by Raelyn Julin, who is offering it for sale. Little is known of its provenance at this time.
It is ironic that this earliest known panel with the motif of The Monk, which indicates the name of the photographer Lake Price in the inscription by Ball Hughes, was the one that came to light last after so much effort had been heretofore expended by Susan Millis ascertaining the source.
The artist Robert Ball Hughes was born January 19, 1804, in London, England, U.K., and died March 5, 1868, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Ball Hughes, as he signed his name on many of his works, i.e., without his first name Robert, was not only a pyrographic artist but an eminent English sculptor and engraver, who had studied at the Royal Academy.
If you have any questions or any additional information to offer about Ball Hughes or this panel, please e-mail the owner Raelyn Julin and the E-Museum Curator.
