Detail of the inscription, which reads as follows:
"Babylonian Lions
from a Drawing by Edwin Landseer, R.A.
taken at the Soological [sic] Gardens
Regents Park. London.
This Sketch was made with a Poker
Boston. 1858.
B.H. Fecit."

Lew Martin inherited the above signed and dated piece from a cousin in the mid 1980s. His recollection is that his cousin probably bought this work around 1946 and most likely in the Chicago area. Prior to that, its provenance is unknown. The framed panel is the second known panel of this title by Robert Ball Hughes, the famous 19th century engraver, sculptor, and pyrographer.

Note that the "R. A." following Sir Edwin Landseer's name in the inscription signifies "Royal Academy" indicating his credentials as a graduate of that prestigious institution.
