Lew Martin inherited the above signed and dated piece from a cousin in the mid 1980s. His recollection is that his cousin probably bought this work around 1946 and most likely in the Chicago area in the United States. Prior to that, its provenance is unknown. This framed panel of a hunting dog entitled "Suspense" is by Robert Ball Hughes, the famous 19th century engraver, sculptor, and pyrographer.
Note that the "R. A." following Sir Edwin Landseer's name in the inscription signifies "Royal Academy" indicating his credentials as a graduate of that prestigious institution.
